Support during the Covid-19 pandemic

In 2020, the Amazon Region Protected Areas Program (ARPA), the world’s largest tropical-forest conservation program, plied resources into the purchase of personal protection equipment (PPE), foodstuffs and information fliers, among other essentials, for the benefit of the communities at ARPA-supported PAs affected by the pandemic. Many of these areas are remote, and so have little or no access to PPEs or information on infection prevention. Amazonian PAs suffering under the socioeconomic impact of the pandemic continued to be helped throughout last year, with further donations of food provisions and PPEs. ARPA supports 117 protected areas together spanning over 60 million hectares of the Brazilian Amazon. The program is a federal-government initiative supported by domestic and foreign donors, such as the GEF, KfW, Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation and the WWF.
