The Social Nautical School of Ilha Grande aims to fill the gaps of public policies regarding the direct protection of children and adolescents members of the caiçara and fishing community, tackling the absence of activities and public projects that value the culture of fishing communities, working to minimize the problems currently existing in Ilha Grande, promoting social well-being, income generation, professional opportunities, health and quality of life for children, youth and women members of the caiçara community of Ilha Grande, which is on the verge of extinction.
The subproject, curated by the proponent LIGA CULTURAL AFRO-BRASILEIRA and supported by the Executive Secretariat of Ilha Grande, seeks to use the sport-oriented tool of sailing and rowing, in the qualification of local youth and in the promotion of Environmental Education in a participatory way, pursuing education of excellence, which generates positive future results in a sustainable and lasting way.
Among the activities planned, we can mention: carrying out playful initiation classes in the sport of traditional sailing and rowing, training its participants within the nautical world, including and valuing women through offering paid work in maintaining sails, promoting environmental education and appreciation of local culture through workshops offered by partners.
The project is expected to reach the current 60 children and adolescents directly and change the local scenario, indirectly reaching the students’ families, since they are also invited to the lectures.
