The overall objective of the subproject is to carry out integrated interdisciplinary analyzes related to pollution by solid waste and its potentially contaminating chemical constituents, in endangered species and in fishing activities, in addition to carrying out conservation efforts, environmental awareness, and scientific dissemination covering eight municipalities and six protected areas.
Transversely, the Clean Tide subproject aims to contribute to the training and qualification of personnel in the application of modern techniques and methodologies in the study of solid waste in coastal ecosystems. This is a pioneering initiative that includes the study of solid waste pollution in multiple coastal compartments, such as beaches, surface and water column (collected by fishing gear), seabed (fishing gear and diving in the Santana Archipelago), and biota (ingestion, entanglement and contaminants), in addition to the application of new methodologies.
The subproject has a duration of 24 months and in the long term it is expected that the work will have continuity and sustainability, becoming a long-term monitoring model. The expected results of this subproject have great potential to support public policies based on research and knowledge aimed at the conservation and sustainability of biodiversity in coastal and marine environments in the state of Rio de Janeiro.
