Studies on marine fisheries and the monitoring of activities related to extractive practices are the main products of the “Northern Rio Fisheries Monitoring Program (PMAP)”, run by the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro’s Scientific and Technological Research Support Foundation, which will set up a program to monitor and track fishing activities across six municipalities in the Campos Basin on Rio’s northern coast. The study municipalities are São Francisco de Itabapoana (Barra do Rio Itabapoana, Guaxindiba and Gargaú), São João da Barra (Atafona), Campos dos Goytacazes (São Tomé Lighthouse and the São Bento Channel), Macaé (Center), Rio das Ostras (Rio das Ostras and beaches) and Armação dos Búzios (Center and beaches).
The hope is that the initiative, which is run by the Agribusiness Research Development Foundation, will result in a data set that can inform the drafting and implementation of sector-wide and public policies in the management and sustainable use of fisheries resources.
