The Cerrado is considered the most biodiverse savannah in the world. Its rich flora, with more than 11 thousand species, fauna, with more than 800 birds and culture make it one of the greatest natural heritages to be conserved.
Baru (Dipteryx alata) is one of the most widely known native fruits of the Cerrado, in addition to being considered a superfood, due to its high nutritional value. It is used in various products, such as oils, flour, and sweets, which contributes to generating income and enhancing local culture. Brazil is the main producer of this fruit, and almost half of the seed production is exported. Its sustainable use is essential to ensure the food security of communities and the conservation of the biome.
The project “Cerrado standing with income generation: the baru production chain as an ally of biodiversity and traditional peoples”, or Baru nut from the Chapada, will count on the support of more than R$9 million from the Global Fund for the Environment (GEF). To disseminate baru as an element of conservation and income in the Cerrado, the project will support the structuring of the baru nut production chain in approximately 374 thousand hectares of the Cerrado in Goiás and Tocantins, ensuring sustainable management and fair trade, with less environmental impact and greater income generation.
The project was structured into three components:
1) Fair and sustainable baru nut production chain
2) Strengthened community businesses
3) Governance, monitoring, and communication
We hope to achieve three major results:
1) A sustainable chain for the production of baru nuts
2) Strengthening and professionalization of community companies
3) A project that is effectively implemented and monitored
The project, implemented by the International Institute of Education of Brazil (IEB), will benefit 3,000 people from traditional communities on 374,000 hectares of the Cerrado in Goiás and Tocantins. This is the second project by the FUNBIO GEF Agency, one of 18 accredited around the world.
Peguei o nome direto do site do GEF, mas eu mudaria o nome para ficar um inglês mais correto.
